Located on Paca Street just blocks from the Baltimore harbor, Paca House provides affordable housing in 92 apartments. The renovation eliminates the out-of-date Single Room Occupancy Apartments and provides 41 studios and 51 one-bedrooms, of which 82 units are permanent supportive housing for the homeless and veterans, and 10 units are market-rate housing. The new construction amenities include a computer lab, library, lounge, two community rooms, on-site laundry, cable television service and computer-ready apartments, and a robust set of supportive services provided by and Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas (VOACC).
Original historic interior details of the building were kept intact, working within the footprints of 3 existing buildings and incorporating 3 new additions that doubles the affordable square footage of the building. One of the building’s additions fills in a vacant parcel along North Paca Street and restores the urban fabric of that block. The building is Energy Star rated and meets the Enterprise Green Community Standards for energy efficiency and incorporates a photovoltaic system on the roof.
