Waldon Studio Architects designed a new 8,500 square foot Eye Clinic at the Veteran’s Administration’s Wilmington, Delaware hospital facility. The new clinic required complete demolition and renovation of the entire West wing of the 5th floor in order to relocate the existing eye clinic from a neighboring floor. As the building’s existing mechanical system could not handle the requirements of the new clinic, WSA designed an addition to the building to house a new mechanical room and additional storage. WSA led the programming and design efforts and worked directly with many VA ophthalmologists to design the new space. Working collaboratively with doctors and staff, WSA was able to create an environment that had better flow than their existing space and was less institutional in its aesthetic without compromising screening, exam, and laser surgery procedures. Light fixtures and window shades were designed to be easily controlled by staff during exams via a push-button system.
